You have up to 3 health plan options (depending on your employee type) – Basic, Value, or Choice Health – to meet your and your family's needs. Changes can be made during an Open Enrollment period each October or after a major life change, like a change in marital status, an addition to the family, or a leave of absence.

There are few things more important than taking care of our loved ones. UVA agrees and has made providing dependent care resources, options, and financial support to employees a primary goal. Whether you need full-time childcare, short-term back-up care for a loved one, or extra support for schoolwork, below you can find resources available to support your caregiving needs offered by UVA or from local community programs.
Depending on your employment status, you have the option to enroll in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS), Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), or Medical Center Retirement Program (MCRP). Through these programs, you also get benefits like life insurance, disability coverage, long-term care benefits, and survivor benefits.
To meet your vision coverage needs, UVA offers two ways to save on eyecare. The first benefit is the Aetna Vision Discount Program, which is automatically included for participants in the UVA Health Plan. You may also choose Davis Vision, which offers additional benefits and provider options.
Every employee has different dental needs, whether basic cleanings and checkups , or covered dependents ready for braces. To meet your unique needs, the University offers two UVA Dental Plan options: Basic and Enhanced Dental.
As a participant in the UVA Health Plan, you automatically have prescription drug coverage managed by OptumRx. Costs for prescriptions vary for Choice, Value, or Basic Health.
UVA offers several benefits savings accounts. Depending on employee type and health plan enrollment, you may have the option to enroll in a Flexible Spending Account, limited Flexible Spending Account, or Health Savings Account. If you are University Staff, you may have access to a Supplemental Benefit Credit.
If you are enrolled in a UVA retirement plan (VRS, ORP, or MCRP), if you are Housestaff, or a Postdoctoral Fellow, you already have basic life insurance coverage at no cost to you.
Disability insurance helps protect your income when you can’t work - whether from illness, injury, pregnancy, surgery, or another condition. New employees are automatically enrolled in disability coverage during the enrollment process, if available based on employee classification. You will have access to the benefit modules in Workday to assist you in enrolling in all of your benefits after several steps have been completed in your onboarding process, such as completing your I-9 document.
