John T. Casteen Diversity-Equity-Inclusion Leadership Award


The Division for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion invites nominations for the 15th annual John T. Casteen Diversity-Equity-Inclusion Leadership Award. The award honors one student, one staff, and one faculty member from the University of Virginia, UVA Health, and University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

The John T. Casteen Diversity-Equity-Inclusion Leadership Award honors University community members who best demonstrate exemplary leadership in the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or in the local community.

Candidates should demonstrate the following:

  • Candidates must be a current student, faculty, or staff member at the University of Virginia, UVA Health, or the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
  • The nominees/recipients must have demonstrated a deep commitment and distinct passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or in the local community; an exemplary leadership role in increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or in the local community; and achievement of a significant and quantifiable impact on diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or in the local community.

The following nominating materials must be submitted by February 16, 2024, to be eligible for consideration:

  1. Nomination Form
  2. Nomination Letter (1) providing a comprehensive overview of the candidate’s leadership and contributions toward diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or in the local community.
  3. Letters of Support (2) highlighting the candidate’s leadership and contributions toward diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or in the local community. At least one letter of support must be from outside the nominee's department.
