Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I apply?

Working as a temporary employee can lead to a meaningful and rewarding career at UVA. Many temporary positions result in regular, benefited positions with higher levels of job security. Additionally, we offer positions that are flexible with a wide variety of assignments, opportunities, and occupations.

How does UVA Temps work?

University departments request a temporary employee using an online temp order request through Jobs@UVA. We review our pool of applicants based on the department’s need and contact potential candidates regarding the assignment. Candidates who have never worked as UVA Temps must schedule an appointment and undergo the screening process.

If selected, temporary employees are provided with detailed information about their assignment and how they will be paid.

What temporary jobs are out there?

The University offers temporary jobs ranging from entry level to specialized positions in all schools, units, departments, Health System, University Physician’s Group, and affiliated foundations.

What are your policies?

The University of Virginia has specific procedures and requirements in place regarding employment. For detailed information, visit our policies page.

Am I eligible for benefits?

Temporary and wage employees do not receive health care, retirement, or leave benefits and are not covered by the provision of the Virginia Personnel Act.

As of January 1, 2014, employers with 50 or more employees are required to provide health benefits to all employees who work an average of 30 or more hours per week. In addition, the Commonwealth of Virginia now limits the maximum number of hours that wage employees are permitted to work to 29 hours weekly or 1,500 hours annually. Read more about this policy change.

Temporary and wage employees are eligible to participate in tax deferred savings plans, an optional retirement savings program that allow employees to tax-defer income and invest for the future. The plans are available through TIAA and Fidelity and are open to all employees who can contribute the monthly minimum of $20.

How do I apply?

UVA Temps uses the University’s online application system, Jobs@UVA. The jobs listed under the Temporary Pool category are general categories and may not be actual positions we are recruiting for at the time you apply. However, we will keep your application on file (Under Review) and contact you if we believe your skills and experiences are a match for a position we are trying to fill.

Go to Jobs@UVA by clicking the Jobs tab above and create a username and password.

  • Click Create Application from the menu on the left and create a new Temp Application
  • Complete the application
  • You will be entering personal information as well as details regarding your employment and educational history (past supervisors’ names, phone numbers, and/or email addresses are required)
  • Apply for specific positions

How do I enter my time/get paid?

Payroll is processed on a biweekly schedule (every other Friday), and you should submit online timesheets through Employee Self-Service. Each pay period begins Monday and ends Sunday at midnight. Consult the payroll calendar.

When entering your time, please enter the total number of hours worked each day and then submit for approval (not just save). If you do not submit your timesheet for supervisor approval before the deadline, you will have to wait until the next pay cycle passes to be paid.

Direct deposit is a requirement of the University and can be set up in Employee Self-Service. If you fail to set up your direct deposit, a paper check will be issued and can be picked up at the reception desk at 914 Emmet Stree (Michie South Building) on payday. You will need to bring a photo ID.
