Hiring & Employment of Students

Full-time UVa Students

A full-time student is defined as a person enrolled (at least 12 credits per semester) in a degree program at the University. Generally, a student may not be employed for more than twenty hours per week in all University jobs. Departments/units are encouraged to post and fill all jobs for full-time students through University Career Services’ CAVLINK. Departments/units must have an available position established in the Human Resource Management System before the full-time student may be paid. To establish a position (assignment), departments/units must submit a Position Action Request Form to HR Consulting Services.

There are several types of full-time student jobs at the University. They include:

  • Non-academic work
Full-time students may be hired by departments/units to perform non-academic work such as driving a bus or performing general clerical duties.

  • Graduate Student Assistantships, and Other Undergraduate and Graduate Student Positions (academic jobs)
Full-time students may be hired by academic departments/units into Graduate Student Assistantships, and other Undergraduate and Graduate positions established through the Executive Vice President and Provost’s University of Virginia Wage Authorization.

  • Federal Work Study Program (FSW)
Full-time students may be hired into the Federal Work Study Program (FSW) through the Executive Vice President and Provost’s University of Virginia Wage Authorization. Further information can be obtained through Student Financial Services’ Employer Handbook regarding FSW.
