I-9 Online for Employees
You need a social security number to complete Section 1 of your I-9. If you do not have a social security number, please visit the I-9 Specialist in your department to complete your form.
You must complete Section 1 by your first day of employment.
How to complete I-9 Section 1
Step 1: Log into New I-9.
Step 2: Use employer name and code: University of Virginia and 14053.
Step 3: Enter the text shown in the box (for security purposes).
Step 4: Enter your name, address, date of birth, and social security number. Check the citizenship box that applies to you:
A citizen of the United States: U.S. Citizen
A noncitizen national of the United States: People born in American Samoa, certain former citizens of the former Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, and certain children of noncitizen nationals born abroad
A Lawful Permanent Resident: Permanent Resident of the U.S. (You will need your Alien Number or USCIS Number.)
An Alien authorized to work: This box applies to F1, J1, H-1B, EAD, O1, Refugees/Asylees, E3, or TN holders.
- F1/J1 Holders: You will need your I-94 number and the expiration date from your I20 or DS2019.
- H-1B, EAD, E3, O1 or TN Holders: You have the option of using your I-94 number or your Alien/USCIS Number, and you will also need to enter the expiration date.
- Refugee/asylee: You will need your I-94. In the expiration date, enter n/a since your employment authorization does not expire.
Step 5: Review the information you entered. If you need to make a change, click on change information. If everything is correct, complete the Employee Electronic Signature box.
Step 6: In this step, you will see a list of acceptable documents you may present to your department based on the citizenship you selected.
Step 7: Go to your department’s I-9 Specialist to complete Section 2 by the third day of employment, or your employment will have to be terminated and you will not be allowed to work.
