Welcome to the Office of Human Resources Immigration Services. We are here to provide information and guide you through the process of working at UVA if you are from a country outside of the U.S. We also ensure that the University complies with all applicable federal and state laws and University policies and procedures as they relate to immigration.
Foreign National Immigration Petition Filing
HRIS offers immigration-related assistance and resources, as well as oversees, facilitates, and monitors foreign national immigration petition filing to ensure that nonimmigrant visa and permanent residency (green card) processing is completed in accordance with relevant regulations.
Guidance For Foreign Nationals & UVA Hiring Units
In addition, one of our primary responsibilities is to guide foreign nationals and hiring units for the duration of the immigration process, usually beginning with temporary status and ending with permanent residence. We manage areas such as:
- Employer-sponsored nonimmigrant visas
- Employer-sponsored permanent residency
- Immigration-related resources for HR, hiring units, foreign nationals, and the larger UVA community
Legal Advice
While we cannot provide legal advice, we can help refer questions requiring legal counsel to Immigration Counsel specially appointed by the Virginia Attorney General to advise the University. Individuals seeking or needing personal legal advice should consult their own attorney.
