2012 Leave Year Information

Change to Payroll Calendar

In 2012, there are 27 pay periods instead of 26. Staff will be paid for the 27th pay period of 2012 in January 2013, so there is NO CHANGE to anyone's pay.

Classified Staff leave accrual rates change because their annual leave accrual is divided over 27 pay periods instead of 26. This means that each biweekly leave accrual in 2012 is slightly LESS than in each biweekly pay period in 2011. The overall annual leave accrual remains the same. Below is a chart detailing the minor alteration in accrual rates necessary to keep annual accruals constant, according to years of service.

Years of Service Annual Accrual Rate 2011 Per Pay Period Accrual 2012 Per Pay Period Accrual
under 5 years 96 3.692 3.555
5-9 120 4.615 4.444
10-14 144 5.538 5.333
15-19 168 6.461 6.222
20-24 192 7.384 7.111
25 years or more 216 8.307 8

While University Staff receive their leave allotment up front at the beginning of the leave year, an employee who separates in 2012 will have their leave owed or used calculated according to the appropriate amount by years of service across the 27 pay periods rather than 26.

2013 Leave Year Beginning Date

Please be aware that the 2013 leave year will begin on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012. Most of us are now accustomed to the leave year beginning BEFORE the holidays, allowing staff to access a new bank of leave when planning for the December holiday season. However, the 2013 leave year begins on Dec. 31, 2012, because that is the pay period that contains Jan. 1, 2013. In other words, all staff should manage their leave to extend through the 2012 holidays, while Classified Staff who have use-or-lose balances will have through Dec. 30, 2012, to use that leave.
