Grace Period, Showers Offered in Wake of Storm

Posted: July 2, 2012

On Friday, June 29, Charlottesville and the surrounding counties were hit with a wind storm that downed trees and power lines, with power outages expected to continue until later this week. While the University is maintaining normal operations, many employees do not have power and/or are experiencing difficulty getting to work.

The University is providing free access to intramural facility showers to members of the U.Va. community who continue to experience power outages due to Friday’s storm.

U.Va. employees, including the Medical Center, should bring a University ID, towel and supplies. Spouses and children are welcome. Since the University is welcoming community members, employees need not accompany their spouses, but children MUST be accompanied by an adult. UVa employees will be asked for their UVa ID; community members/spouses will be asked to produce a photo ID and to note their address, email and birth date. There is no charge for the showers.

The following showers are available.

  • U.V.a Memorial Gym: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • U.Va. Aquatic & Fitness Center: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • North Grounds Recreation Center: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Because the University’s policy on inclement weather was just implemented in 2010, supervisors may not be aware that it is within their scope of authority to allow a grace period of up to two hours past the start of the normal shift to report to work. In other words, employees who notified their supervisors that they were having difficulty making their way in to the University need not take personal or other leave, at the supervisor’s discretion. Read the policy for details.

If a supervisor chose to grant grace periods, employees would submit time worked as they normally do for that day.
