Essential Work Skills Group Learning Program, Fall Session

Program Description: Essential Work Skills helps employees develop the skills and competencies necessary to be successful at the University of Virginia. The focus of the training series is to enhance communication skills and to increase understanding of how the workplace operates. You’ll interact with other participants during discussions and activities, learning from each other and building valuable relationships.
Audience: This program is designed as an introduction to the topic. No prior knowledge or skill is necessary. For salaried support staff members who have completed at least 12 months of service at the University and have achieved at least a rating of “Effective” in the probationary or annual performance review. Successful completion earns the employee a certificate of achievement and a one-time, base salary increase of $600 per year.
Program Requirements of the Manager: Managers are expected to nominate employees for participation in the program and sign a commitment of support. Allow the participant to be absent from work during all regularly scheduled sessions. Secure departmental funding, working with your department’s HR contact, for a one-time, $600 base salary increase for employees who successfully complete the program. Attend a graduation ceremony to recognize participants and acknowledge their support.

Date and Time: Wednesdays unless otherwise indicated. September 6, 9:00am – 12:00pm, September 13, 20, 8:30 -10:30 am, September 27, 9:00am – 12:00pm (Harrison Small Institute-Special Collections), October 4, 11, 18, 25, November 1, 8, 8:30 – 10:30am, November 14, 9:00am – 1:00 pm (Newcomb Hall)
Program Deadlines and Requirements: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Please complete the Nomination Form to nominate an individual for the Essential Work Skills series. Make sure to include a PTAO and supervisor’s signature. Submit the completed and signed nomination to Diane Ober.
