How to Apply for Education Benefits
Determine that you are eligible based on the requirements of the program.
Decide what course(s) you wish to take.
If you will be attending during work hours, prior to submitting your request discuss attending the course with your supervisor, including content and work coverage. When you submit your on-line request, you will be prompted for your supervisor's computing id. Once approved, an email will be sent to that supervisor.
Complete the Educational Benefit request using Benefits@UVa.
The Employee Request for Education Benefits form is a contract between you, as an individual, and the University. Be sure you have read and understood the instructions. Read the Education Benefits Program information carefully to be sure you understand the requirements of the program.
Your request will be reviewed and processed by the Benefits Office. You will be notified of the decision by e-mail.
You will receive the Education Benefit funds in your paycheck. Allow up to 2 pay periods for biweekly payroll processing and one month for monthly payroll processing.
Use the benefit payment to enroll and pay for the course. The Benefits office does not send payments to the institution or enroll you in classes, even for UVa classes.
If a course is canceled or you have to drop a course, you need to repay the money and you must contact the HR Service Center within one month of cancel or drop date. You must either make a check out to UVa and send to University Human Resources or you can contact the HR Service Center to request that the amount be withheld from your next paycheck by e-mailing AskHR@virginia.edu.
Violating any requirements of the program, including failing to enroll and pay for a course or failing to repay funds after a course in canceled or you have dropped a course, could lead to disciplinary action, up to and including termination; will require repayment of the Education Benefit; and may lead to the loss of eligibility for future Education Benefit assistance.
