Faculty and Staff: A Dynamic, Engaged Community

Engaged Community

“The intellectual vitality of the University is its most compelling feature. It is an enriching place, with a commitment to academic openness and excellence shared by everyone at the University—students, faculty, and staff.”

—Julian Bond

Professor of history & Chairman of the board, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

In an era when the competition for top talent amongst peer institutions is more spirited than ever, University Human Resources support the academic mission of the University by creating a work environment that attracts, develops, and retains an outstanding and diverse workforce. UHR strives to put the “human” back in Human Resources, through policies and programs that encourage continuous learning and motivate employees toward success.

Before the University opened its doors in 1825, Jefferson corresponded with scholars in the United States and Europe, seeking the best faculty to teach in the areas of philosophy, arts, foreign languages, science, law, and medicine. When classes officially began, eight faculty members greeted the first students.

Like their predecessors, U.Va.’s current faculty members were selected from some of the world’s foremost universities not simply because of their accomplishments but also because of their enthusiasm and energy. As the University’s most valuable resource, faculty members present new perspectives and transmit new knowledge, supporting the University’s primary missions of education, research, public service, and patient care.

The excellence of our faculty has been recognized nationally and internationally with such awards and honors as a Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prizes, Guggenheim Fellowships, MacArthur Fellowships, and Fulbright Fellowships.

Just as the undergraduates at U.Va. will look back at their time here as one of learning, growth, change, and exploration, so should our faculty and staff. When one reflects on a career at the University, it will stand out, as U.Va. does, for its uncommon excellence.
