Disability

Active, full-time postdoctoral fellows who work at least 30 hours per week are eligible for short- or long-term disability insurance through The Standard. UVA pays 100% of the cost.

Short-Term Disability Insurance

  • Provides income replacement benefits if you are unable to work due to an accident or sickness (60% of weekly earnings to maximum benefit of $700/week)
  • Accident and sickness: benefit waiting period of eight days, Maternity: covered the same way as sickness
  • Maximum benefit period of 90 days
  • If you receive other types of income, such as Workers Compensation, Social Security, or other group disability benefits, they may be considered offsets from the amount The Standard will pay

Short-Term Disability benefits will cease when long-term disability becomes payable. You will not receive these benefits while you are receiving sick leave.

Long-Term Disability Insurance

  • Provides income replacement benefits for you and your family in the event you are unable to work due to an accident or sickness (60% of monthly salary with $3,000 monthly maximum)
  • Benefit waiting period of 90 days
  • Three-month lump sum survivor benefit payable if death occurs while receiving long-term disability
  • If you receive other types of income, such as Workers Compensation, Social Security, or other group disability benefits, they may be considered offsets from the amount The Standard will pay

3/12 Pre-existing Clause: Three-month look back period to see if you were treatment-free (not including the first 12 months of coverage during a pre-existing condition)
