What is a postdoctoral fellow

Postdoctoral Fellow is the title given to postdoctoral appointees because of their source of funding (training grant, foreign government, individual fellowship, etc.). They are not considered employees of the University, so their benefits differ from those of Postdoctoral Research Associates.

Postdoctoral Fellows are traditionally characterized by the following:

  • for those who with a recent Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate
  • involves full-time research or scholarship
  • preparatory for a full-time academic or research career
  • supervised by a senior scholar
