The Medical Center provides an integrated short- and long-term disability benefit. The plan provides protection of income when an employee is unable to work, or can work only part-time because of illness or injury. The base plan is paid entirely by the University. The short-term coverage provides a weekly benefit of 60 percent of salary, up to a weekly maximum of $1,100 beginning on the 15th day of continuous disability. The long-term coverage provides 60 percent income replacement up to a maximum of $10,000 per month after the six months of STD benefits have expired. The optional contributory plan provides a monthly benefit of 66 2/3 percent of salary up to a monthly maximum of $10,000. Benefits continue for the duration of the disability up to normal retirement age as defined by Social Security or to age 65, whichever is greater.

Through December 31, 2015, The Hartford continues to manage all short-term and long-term disability claims. If on a current disability claim with The Hartford you will continue that claim with Hartford until your claim is closed. All disability claims effective January 1, 2016 and forward will be managed and administrated through UNUM.
