Back-up Care

Benefits-eligible employees can use Bright Horizons back-up care to access affordable, temporary care for loved ones of any age or for themselves.

  • Helps you get to work by offering back-up care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • Care provided either at licensed care facilities or in-home by care providers who have been screened, trained (including CPR and first aid), and background-checked
  • Examples of when you might need this service
    • unexpected issues: illness, unreliable caregivers, school closures
    • planned occasions: holidays, caregiver vacations, surgery
    • difficult to resolve situations: no family support, non-traditional work hours, loved ones who live elsewhere
    • in-home personal care, meal preparation, and everyday household tasks while you are recuperating from unexpected illness or planned events (i.e. surgery)

How It Works

Benefits-eligible employees have 10 back-up care days per year at UVA’s discounted rate.

  • Pre-register with Bright Horizons
  • If you are not already registered, use UVA (username) and backup8 (password) to log in for the first time
  • Bright Horizons will require credit card information for payment (money is never exchanged at the time of care)
  • When care is needed, call the toll-free number to consult back-up care specialists, who will identify the most appropriate care provider within the network to meet your specific need


  • Center-based care: $15/day per child

  • In-Home care: $30/day (up to three dependents)

Bright Horizons Offers

  • 3,000+ child care centers close to work or home, providing an active, structured environment with group/social interaction

  • 2,000+ home healthcare and nanny agencies

  • Care available 24 hours, including weekends and overnight (dependent does not need to reside in the employee’s home)

  • Agencies/centers that are licensed, bonded, and insured
