Birth or Adoption
Dependent children are eligible for coverage under your UVa Health, UVa Dental and Davis Vision Plans. However, you must submit a request/application within the designated timeframe in order for them to be enrolled. Dependents, including newborn babies, are not automatically covered under your policy.
You must notify the UHR Benefits Office within 60 days of the date of birth or adoption in order for the coverage to be retroactive to the date of birth or adoption.
You may not change your health care option at this time; you’ll need to wait until the next open enrollment period to do that.
How to enroll:
Submit a request within 60 days of the date of birth or adoption through Employee Benefits Self-Service for Academic employees or a written health plan application for Medical Center employees to enroll your child or other eligible dependent for coverage.
Provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate, hospital-provided Proof of Birth letter, or court documentation verifying the adoption.
When Coverage Begins

For birth, adoption or placement for adoption, you can enroll yourself, the new child as well as any eligible dependent not already on your policy within the timeframes listed above.
